On the fence on the 8th? Here are the interviews everyone should listen to before May 25th
WHILE THERE ARE just days to go until the nation takes to the polls on the repeal of the 8th Amendment, it would be folly to assume every person in Ireland has nailed their colours to the mast, and can say for certain which way they intend to vote on May 25th.

Whether the intensity of campaigning on both sides has indirectly isolated voters or members of the public have simply chosen not to engage until now, the need to inform, educate and facilitate conversations cannot be underestimated at this time.
With that in mind, we have compiled a list of podcasts, which seek to give an insight into the 8th Amendment’s history and legacy, as well as provide a platform to those who have experience of the Amendment, in both a personal and professional capacity.
If you are still on the fence, have a listen to these interviews, and then go to the polls, safe in the knowledge you know what’s what.

The History
Inside Politics: How the 8th was passed
With Pro-Life and Pro-Choice campaigns intensifying inordinately over recent months, and both sides going head to head in mainstream and social media as the referendum draws ever closer, the voices of those who are unfamiliar with the Amendment’s history can often get lost in the din.
Whether for, against or uncertain on its repeal, familiarising yourself with the history of the 8th Amendment is highly recommended, and may help to inform your decision on May 25th.
In 2016, Irish Times correspondent, Ruadhán MacCormaic, joined Hugh Linehan in a 33-minute podcast to discuss the political, legal and social circumstances which led to the passing of the now hugely contentious 8th Amendment.
The Pro-Choice Stance
An Irishman Abroad: Repeal the 8th Special
Featuring Amnesty International’s Colm O’Gorman and Abortion Support Network’s Mara Clarke, as well as Dr Ciara Kelly, writer Louise O’ Neill, and comedian Tara Flynn, this podcast episode highlights the harsh reality of denying abortion in the case of crisis pregnancy.
Hosted by Jarlath O’Regan, the programme focuses on the impact the 8th Amendment had, and continues to have, on women and girls in Ireland.
Insightful, measured and supportive, this episode of An Irishman Abroad is a must-listen for anyone who has yet to make a decision on which way to vote on May 25th.
The Male Perspective
Don’t Stop Repealin’: Lads, Lads, Lads
The 6th episode in a podcast series hosted by Una Mullally and Andrea Horan, this one focuses its attention on the importance men play in the upcoming referendum.
If you’re male, unsure where you stand on the debate, or are of the opinion that abortion is a ‘women’s issue’, it’s worth taking the time to sit down and have a listen to guests, Richie Sadlier, Blindboy Boatclub and Maser.
All offer thoughtful and compassionate responses on a matter which has been taking center-stage in Irish public consciousness.
The Lived Experience
The Women’s Podcast: Everyday Stories – Talking About Abortion
Joining host Roísín Ingle is Caoimhe Anglin – someone who seeks to facilitate an honest and open conversation around the topic of abortion through a project called Everyday Stories, which was established in 2016.
Everyday Stories is a project that publishes personal accounts from women who have been affected by the 8th Amendment.
Inspired by her own experience of abortion, Caoimhe sought to give a voice to individuals who have sought abortions, as well as inject some empathy, humanity and compassion into the public debate.
The project’s intention is not to sway the individual either way, but to ensure all sides are provided with the facts they need to make an informed choice on May 25th – all of which Caoimhe discusses with Roísín in the 180th episode of The Women’s Podcast.
