Open thread: What's the best bit of advice your mother ever gave you?

Save money? Be good to other people? Stop hitting your brothers and sisters? Share with the group.

GIVEN THAT TODAY is Mother’s Day – you didn’t forget, did you? – it’s a good time to be thankful for all the good things we’ve gotten from our mams.

Aside from clothing us, feeding us, and putting up with our teenage nonsense, advice from the ma is one of the things that will stick with you through the years.

A quick ask around TheJournal.ie office turned up these gems of advice from mothers:

Good manners will get you anywhere
Don’t wear a skirt that shows your knees. You don’t have great knees.
Bring a warm jacket (I got that advice going to San Diego for a J1. Turns out, I needed the jacket).
Don’t be a d*ckhead.
If you ever have trouble sleeping, picture a nice calm sunny beach. Works every time!
A swan will break your arm if you get too close.

So over to you in the comments. What’s the best bit of advice your mother ever gave you?
