What's the greatest episode of Irish television, ever?
A POLL CARRIED out recently on behalf of UPC revealed what Ireland’s favourite TV moments are, from Riverdance to Fair City’s first gay kiss in 1996.
Katie Taylor’s gold medal win, Packie Bonner saving the penalty at Italia ’90 and Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Ireland make the list too.
We’re going a little deeper and trying to identify some of the greatest episodes of Irish television ever.
Let us know your favourite memories in the comments section… here are a few to get you started:
The episode of Bosco where they went to the bottling factory
Usually they went to the zoo through the magic door…
But there was the odd occasion when they would splash out and go to a meat processing plant, a sorting office, or even the Ringsend bottling plant (which sadly is no more)…
And of course there were the times that this happened:
The Know Your Sport episode where the fella had obviously met the mystery guest in the car park beforehand
That’s the only explanation for how he got the answer so quickly.

The episode of Glenroe where Fidelma and Miley were caught rapid
Christmas 1997 saw the country thrown into turmoil with the shock of Miley Byrne rolling in the hay with Biddy’s cousin Fidelma.

The Den Christmas Special where Ray’s Scent of Man was stolen
Even Crimeline got involved!

Riverdance on the Eurovision
Not really an episode per se, but everyone remembers where they were when this particular Eurovision moment was broadcast.

The episode of The Den where this child didn’t understand the game
The helpless laughter really makes it.

The finale of The Family
Roddy Doyle’s brutal (in a good way) drama took place over four episodes, each telling the story of one member of The Family; Charlo, his wife Paula and their children Leanne and John Paul.
Paula’s episode was the fourth and final installment of a landmark series for Irish TV.

The episode of Hands where they made butter in Fermanagh
Any episode of the RTÉ series Hands could make the list, to be fair.

Liam and Eoghan’s gay kiss on Fair City
This 1996 lip locker was the first ever gay kiss on Irish television.
