FOR THE LAST couple of months, a mystery brain teaser has been doing the rounds on Facebook – with hundreds of thousands of users sharing it for their friends to have a go.
And today it has really blown up.
It looks relatively simple at first glance

The most common reply is 16 – but that’s not right
It’s only when you go through it line by line that it becomes clear:
The first line is simple, each apple is equal to 10
Then, with 18 as the answer on the second line, these bananas each must equal four
Four minus two coconuts = two
Crucially though, on the last line, there is only one coconut and three bananas
So, 1 + 10 + 3 = 14
Right?
The last line’s optical illusion tricks most people into thinking there are two extra numbers in the equation.
Since it’s gone viral, the whole internet has been arguing over what is the correct answer, but the consensus has settled on 14.
