This mother still breastfeeds her six-year-old daughter, and the internet is going crazy

Yes, you read that right – six.

A MOTHER OF two in the UK has defended her decision to keep breastfeeding her six-year-old daughter – and the internet is arguing whether she is right or wrong to do so.

Six years old is slightly beyond the guideline age of two years old for breastfeeding given out by the World Health Organisation, but she defended herself on This Morning yesterday.

Speaking on the ITV show, Denise Sumpter outlined her position, saying that she will still breastfeed her daughter Bella when she’s tired or ill.

She says she has had “so much support”

She originally featured in the Daily Mirror in December, telling her story. But it was only her appearance on ITV’s This Morning yesterday that caused the public to take notice.

Sumpter was joined by a breastfeeding expert who told her that it is not necessary to breastfeed a child of that age, and that the nutritional benefits are “virtually negligible”. She explained her stance as:

I can’t express but I feed my children whenever I want. It’s not just a drink – it isn’t like Cola – its nutrition, it’s a living food. It changes hour by hour… so that child gets a perfect nutritional, immunological fix.[I’m] happy and I’ll feel really fulfilled and that I’ve done the best for my children

People on Twitter weren’t so enthusiastic

And some questioned the need to make it so public

But others thought that it’s her business and nobody else’s
