Bright stars: What to see in the sky tonight

Jupiter, Venus and a thin slice of crescent moon to be highly visible at 8.30pm.

IT’S LOOKING LIKE it will be a clear night so if you’re out and about this evening, heed the words of advice from Astronomy Ireland and look to the sky.

For the past month or longer, the planets of Venus and Jupiter have frequently been visible in the night sky. Tonight, as with last night), Astronomy Ireland is saying that there will be a particularly beautiful sight as Venus and Jupiter will be spectacularly bright in the western sky alongside a thin crescent Moon.

This illustration, put together through Stellarium.org, might help you identify the sight tonight. This is how the sky should look at around 8.30pm:

Astronomy Ireland wants people to send their photographs and reports of tonight’s planet-gazing to observe@astronomy.ie for inclusion in the next Astronomy & Space magazine.
