Marvel is finally making a female superhero movie and fans couldn't be happier
REJOICE, WORLD!
We are finally getting the female superhero film we deserve.
Last night, Marvel announced that its first ever female-led superhero movie, Captain Marvel, will be released on March 8th 2019.
As for who’s donning the cape? That would be none other than Brie Larson, who won an Oscar for her turn in Room earlier this year. Larson celebrated the announcement by posting this photo on Instagram last night.
The actress will play Carol Danvers, one of the most enduring female characters in the Marvel universe. The character made her debut in 1968 and has since been known as Ms. Marvel, Binary and Captain Marvel. (She has been known as Captain Marvel since 2012.)
When plans for a Captain Marvel movie were announced back in 2014, Time wrote that “the fighter pilot with half-alien DNA and a passing resemblance to Gloria Steinem in both looks and feminist conviction will be a far cry from the damsels in distress” we’re used to seeing in superhero movie.
People have taken to Twitter to express their delight at the news.

Marvel has long been criticised for not making movies with female leads. Last year, calls for a Black Widow movie reached fever pitch when Scarlett Johansson poked fun at the studio’s sexism in a Saturday Night Live sketch that asked, “Does Marvel not know how to make a girl superhero movie?”
Perhaps Captain Marvel will pave the way for the Black Widow movie of our dreams.
