Warner Bros issued a statement this morning with the news

The Big Bang Theory family has lost a beloved member today with the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who hilariously and memorably voiced the role of Mrs. Wolowitz. Unseen by viewers, the Mrs. Wolowitz character became a bit of a mystery throughout the show’s eight seasons. What was not a mystery, however, was Carol Ann’s immense talent and comedic timing, which were on display during each unforgettable appearance.

Carol Ann has been acting since the 70s and has had many minor roles on TV shows such as Seinfeld, Cheers, and Six Feet Under.

She was best know for her role as Howard Wolowitz’s unseen mother Debbie, who, undoubtedly is the best character in the show. Susi’s co-stars from the hit show have been tweeting tributes.

Mrs. Wolowitz was never fully seen on screen but was instead knwon by her loud, obnoxious shouting through the Wolowitz home. The only sightings of the character were in the episodes The Countdown Reflection (where she is seen off to the side at Howard’s wedding in an aerial shot)
