The ceremony, which was broadcast on RTÉ One, is held every year to acknowledge individuals who have displayed bravery and determination in the face of adversity.

In the aftermath of the ceremony, Twitter was awash with comments which paid tribute to Catherine Corless – the amateur historian responsible for uncovering the secretive burial of hundreds of infants at Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, Co Galway.
