AH, CHICAGO. THE windy city. Home of deep pan pizzas, Kanye and many quality J1s down the years.
Chicago has been good to Ireland, and Ireland has been good to Chicago in return.
But there’s one small problem
Yes, there’s a sizeable portion of the Irish population that have invented a letter in Chicago
Some of us pronounce it Chicargo instead of Chicago – and nobody knows why
Some find it all a bit gas
But most Irish abroad and Chicagoans give it two major thumbs down
It lost its charm long ago
In fairness, the situation has got so serious that we might have to give up our own verbal snobbery if we’re not careful
A modest proposal.
Lord knows we’re world class at giving out about pronunciation here in Ireland.
So, we should all just agree that Chicago doesn’t have an ‘r’ in it
Let’s think of the poor people that have to put up with it from time to time
They’ll thanks us for it in the end.
