CIARA.
It’s a name that means ‘dark haired’ or ‘little, dark-haired one’ is Irish in origin.
It’s also the name (albeit spelled differently) of British actress Keira Knightley, and the name of the US singer Ciara (who pronounces it Sierra).
In an article published yesterday Buzzfeed chose a number of perceived ‘ghetto’ names and debunked their actual meaning or origin (without defining the meaning of ‘ghetto’, somewhat problematically).
The likes of Aisha, Mercedes and Rashida are touted as female ‘ghetto’ names, along with Ciara.
People are confused. Real confused.
This isn’t the first time either.
In 2013 there were 214 Ciaras born in Ireland, ranking the name at number 29.
In America there were a comparatively low number of 432 Ciaras born, ranking it at 650 (between Saige and Estrella). An alternative spelling ‘Sierra’ was the 347th most popular name, while ‘Kiera’ was 443rd.
