9 classic films that were cruelly snubbed by the Oscars
WITH EVERY ROUND of Oscar nominations comes disappointment that your favourite film wasn’t nominated.
But as these films show, being nominated is not the be all and end all.
In fact, it barely even matters.
Here are some classic films that were famously hard done by the Oscars.
1. The Big Lebowski

The Coen Brothers are Oscar veterans at this point having been nominated and won for films like Fargo, True Grit, No Country For Old Men and A Serious Man.
Despite being arguably their best-loved and most-quoted film, The Big Lebowski was cruelly snubbed by the Academy in 1999 and received exactly zero nominations.
A travesty, if you ask us.
2. Scarface

Scarface posters adorn the walls of many an Irish lad’s bedroom, but how many Oscar nominations did Tony Montana and his crew earn?
THAT’S RIGHT: NONE.
3. Blade Runner

Blade Runner may frequently be cited as a sci-fi masterpiece, but the Academy didn’t see it that way. The film received two technical nominations, but was shut out of the major categories. (Gandhi won that year instead.)
4. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Although director Stanley Kubrick was nominated for Best Director, this futuristic epic failed to receive a nomination for Best Picture. Forty-five years on, it remains a classic, so who’s having the last laugh now?
5. Singin’ In The Rain

It may be one of the most iconic musicals ever made, but that meant diddly squat to the Academy, which nominated it for just two Oscars – Best Supporting Actress and Best Music.
Whatever.
6. Psycho

Revered as he may be, Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar and a number of his films didn’t fare so well at the Academy Awards either. Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest – none of these were nominated for Best Picture.
Take some solace, Jennifer Aniston. (Okay, that might be a stretch.)
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

It’s one of the loveliest, most beloved films of recent years. Eternal Sunshine did win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, but it was omitted from Best Picture.
Sadface.
8. Rosemary’s Baby

SORRY, ROSEMARY’S BABY. NO BEST PICTURE NOMINATION FOR YOU!
9. The Dark Knight

There’s no doubting that The Dark Knight was the film of 2008, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and earning an Oscar for the late Heath Ledger.
The fact that it failed to earn a Best Picture nomination despite being a firm favourite of audiences and critics alike disappointed many, even Christopher Nolan’s brother who wrote:
Still, though. $1 billion > Oscars
