COLIN FARRELL HAS written a plea to Irish voters to support marriage equality in advance of next year’s referendum.
Writing for The Sunday World the actor details the homophobic abuse suffered by his brother Eamon, and laments the fact that he had to leave Ireland and travel to Canada in order to get married.
[My brother] is at home in Dublin living in peace and love with his husband of some years, Steven. They are about the the healthiest and happiest couple I know.
Farrell calls on the Irish people to “lead by example” when the “world is watching” next spring as Ireland votes on marriage equality.
Farrell and his brother have been supporters of the BeLonG To campaign to combat homophobic bullying for some time now. Eamon Farrell has spoken of the violent bullying he endured in school and in a statement earlier this year Colin said:
Whether it be the attacking of gay students, which I witnessed first hand happening to my own brother, or students who are in the minority as a result of race or religious beliefs or any other such characteristic that separates them from ‘the norm’, it is all wrong and has no place in a just and compassionate country such as I know Ireland to be.
Farrell has also joined BeLonG To’s campaign for civil marriage equality, urging people to register to vote by the 25 November deadline.
