FORMER EXCEPTIONALLY ELIGIBLE batchelor Benedict Cumberbatch will reportedly today say I do to fiancé Sophie Hunter on the Isle of Wight.
The pair declared their engagement via an announcement in The Times last November, and in January it was confirmed that Hunter is expecting the couple’s first child, with the baby due in ‘early summer’.
Various reports over the past few days have placed the ceremony on the Isle of Wight today, with The Sun carrying out some sleuthing that Sherlock himself would be proud of.
Cumberbatch’s massive popularity and avid fanbase means that the engagement and pregnancy (and now wedding) announcements were met with much tongue-in-cheek wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth:
And headlines like this:
But really, it’s going to be okay.
Here’s why.
His fans really are happy for him
Cumberbatch’s legion of fans, known collectively as ‘Cumberbitches’ are sick of being tarred with the ‘hysterical’ brush.
The fandom has a massive presence on Tumblr, where good wishes are being bestowed upon the happy couple in advance of the wedding.
Could Watson be the best man?
Cumberbatch is probably best known for his role in the BBC series Sherlock, where he plays the detective opposite Martin Freeman’s John Watson.
The Sun reports this morning that Freeman could be best man at today’s wedding.
(Although Freeman’s partner Amanda Abbington’s tweet this morning wasn’t the most romantic of sentiments)
Abbington also told a Twitter follower that she was spending the day ‘with the three people I love most in the world. Like every Saturday’.
Cumberbatch and Hunter are quite the couple
Here they are at the BAFTAS:
And the Golden Globes:
It’s Valentine’s Day
And only he could get away with it.
The Isle of Wight’s County Press reports that the ceremony will take place at the Mottistone Church of St Peter and Paul, with a reception at an adjacent manor.
The Sun says that it received a legal letter warning that the event on the Isle of White today was a private affair and that photographers and reporters would be banned.
In recent weeks Cumberbatch has given few hints as to when he and Hunter would actually be tying the knot, hinting that the big day was still a way off.
