EARLIER THIS WEEK, Angela Lansbury won an Olivier Award for her performance in the West End production of Blithe Spirit.
On accepting the award, the 89-year-old actress said that she felt like “a million bucks” and joked that she couldn’t remember a lot of things these days, but she could remember her lines.
Yesterday, The Daily Mail clearly thought the veteran actress needed to be taken down a peg and made some needlessly harsh comments about her appearance.
In a piece about Lansbury’s win, the newspaper’s theatre critic Quentin Letts wrote:
With her oyster eyes, half-swallowed lips and those pouchy cheeks, Dame Angela Lansbury hardly meets the stereotype of award-winning actress.
Oof.
The internet immediately jumped to Lansbury’s defence and many were critical of the newspaper’s comments.
Some other internet vigilantes took to Quentin Letts’ Wikipedia to make this edit.
The actress herself has not addressed the comments herself, as we’re sure she’s probably far too busy to deal with such nonsense.
All hail Jessica Fletcher.
