While you may not like the cut of their jib, you are in fact attracted to all of them… because of gravitational pull.

You’ll be able to learn more about this in September when a project called D’Art of Physics is launched in Dublin, aiming to capture people’s imagination about the wonder of physics.

Statements about physics will appear as advertisements on DART trains in an attempt to get a conversation about the physical sciences going.

Statements like:

Scientists Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin and Shane Bergin (who’s still celebrating TCD’s breakthrough with the pitch drop experiment earlier this month) are among those involved in the project, which has received funding from the Science Gallery, Intel, Science Foundation Ireland, TCD and the Institute of Physics.

Ní Shúilleabháin told DailyEdge.ie that the idea for D’art of Physics came from the ‘Poetry on the Tube’ project, which aimed to bring poetry to a wider audience.

She said that it’s hoped that the advertisements will encourage people to go on the web to find out more about physics, while the ultimate aim is to see more people studying the subject at third level and beyond.

She also said the problems currently start in secondary school:

Some of the reasons for the low level of uptake of physics at third level  is that they’re aren’t enough physics teachers at second level, which is something that needs to be addressed. It’s also so maths based that it turns people off.

Ní Shúilleabháin hopes that the appeal of the project will go beyond those interested in studying physics, and that it will start a necessary conversation.
