AFTER SELENA GOMEZ posted a body-positive video of her and her friends on Instagram in March, the headlines were dominated by her caption which critized society’s ‘beauty myth’.
Under the video, Selena wrote:
The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty. I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone.
Wind in her sails.
It was a response to paparazzi photos of her that were taken of her and then ridiculously used to criticize her body. After just recovering from a kidney transplant last year, Selena's body has been through a lot. So it was great to see her send out a public message of support for her body and for other women.
But the *real* story is the song in the video she shared:
It's 'Dreams tonite' by Alvvays (Always with two v's) - a Canadian indie pop band formed in Toronto, Ontario in 2011.
It's seriously dreamy, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey's 'Video Games', and the video is beautifully shot as well with a late 1960s aesthetic.
Look, if it has to be stuck in my head, it has to be stuck in yours too!
