TG4's answer to Planet Earth aired last night and nobody could believe it was really Ireland

Woah.

LAST NIGHT, ÉIRE Fhiáin, TG4′s answer to Planet Earth, debuted on our television screens.

Directed by Eoin Warner, the two-part series looks at Ireland’s “most striking wild environment” and promises to be nature television of the highest order.

Last night’s episode focused on the Skellig Islands and offered a close-up glimpse of one of the most rugged, isolated parts of the country.

And we got better acquainted with all the lads that call the Skellig Islands home.

Look!

It gave Planet Earth a run for its money when it came to gorey animal drama, too…

Viewers at home could scarcely believe that this was Ireland we were looking at.

So exotic and not a bog in sight.

The photography was nothing short of breathtaking.

Who needs David Attenborough, eh?

Talk about not appreciating what’s on your own doorstep, eh? The two-part series concludes next week with an episode dedicated to the Wesht.

From his home county of Galway, Eoin explores the sheltered Connemara Islands before heading north for Mayo to encounter some of our hardiest long distance travellers – The Whooper Swans who arrive out of the north every Autumn escaping the bitter winter in Iceland.
We go underwater to meet Basking Sharks, which now thrive in Irish waters after years of persecution came to an end. We meet the Red Squirrels of Donegal who prove they have just the personality needed to make a comeback before heading for the hills of Glenveagh – the realm of the magnificent Golden Eagle and Eoin’s jounrey’s end on Malin Head.

We can’t wait.
