THERE HAS ONLY been one TV show that people have been talking about in the US this year, and that is Empire.

It aired in the States in January and by the end of its run was pulling in over 20 million viewers. It starts tonight on E4 at 9pm, and you can expect there to be plenty of hype around it.

What’s it all about?

Business mogul and rapper Lucious Lyon (played by Oscar nominee Terrence Howard, above) needs to decide which of his three sons takes over his record label.

Two of his sons are successful musicians themselves and the other is high up in the company already. The series sees them battle it out to take over Empire records from their father – with many a melodrama along the way.

Who’s the star?

Lucious’ ex-wife Cookie (played by another Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson) comes out of prison at the start of the show – and is out to get back what is rightfully hers.

She pretty much steals the show with her sassy one-liners and general attitude:

What about the guest stars?

Empire is getting talked about because of its ridiculous list of guest stars that randomly pop up all over the place. People who have shown up include Cuba Gooding Jr, Mary J Blige, Rita Ora, Snoop Dog – with Naomi Campbell and Jennifer Hudson in there as recurring characters.

And the music?

Timbaland produced all the music on the show and some of the tunes have been received extremely well.

Given so many of the characters in Empire are artists, there is ample opportunity for original songs – and people have fallen in love with them:

There are 12 episodes in total, and they’ll be shown weekly on Tuesday nights on E4.

Prepare yourself for some seriously over-the-top drama, everyone.
