Beam me down Scotty: William Shatner disses Facebook app

The Facebook app ‘Mentions’, designed to let celebrities interact with their fans, has drawn the veteran Star Trekker’s ire.

CANADIAN ACTOR AND all-round cool cat William Shatner has written a lengthy critique of Facebook’s Mentions app on his own blog.

Writing on his Tumblr account ‘Shatner Speaks’, the thespian best known for portraying Captain Kirk in Star Trek compared the app unfavorably with the Facebook ‘Pages app’.

Speaking about the difference between Mentions and Pages apps, Shatner describes how “the mentions app has… well mentions of you on Facebook” while Pages “has graphs and other really cool statistics on your posts”.

Shatner describes the posting function in Pages as being “a bit sexier” than its counterpart in Mentions. One major issue Shatner took with the app was the requirement to follow another celebrity:

The app is only available to those with verified Facebook pages in the US, with plans to roll out the service to other countries in the coming months.The Mentions app was introduced by Facebook last week.

On the use of the app they said: “[the app] makes it easy for public figures to talk with their fans and each other on the go”.
