Fire Brigade issues painfully obvious warning about cheese on toast

Careful now. You might end up brown bread.

FEELING PECKISH THIS eve? Fancy a nice cheese toasty to fill the gap?

Don’t try turning the toaster on its side to make one.

That’s the message London Fire Brigade took to Twitter to deliver this week.

The team behind the Fire Brigade’s official account revealed that a toasted cheese mishap was suspected to have been to blame for a house fire in Croydon, South London.

A fire crew was called to deal with the minor blaze and when they arrived they discovered completely burned bread and a toaster on its side. A work top was also damaged during the incident, but nobody was hurt.

Crew manager Nick Morley gave an official warning via the London Fire Brigade website:

Toasters are not designed to be put on their side and used to grill cheese on toast. Not only does it generate heat onto the work surface as we saw at this incident but the dry left over crumbs from the bottom of the toaster can get onto the hot elements and ignite.

I never thought I’d have to give this advice as it’s painfully obvious but if you want cheese on toast use a grill not a toaster.

We’re glad they cleared that one up.
