FISH AND CHIPS hold a special place in the hearts of many. And as we all know, the best way to indulge in them is straight out of the local chipper.

So, here are finest fish and chip establishments from around the country:

1. Donkey Ford’s, Limerick

Donkey Ford's | Yelp Yelp Yelp

This just might have the reputation as the best fish and chips in the country (outside the more traditionally famous places) and it’s a mantle that is well deserved. Donkey Ford’s is Limerick and the Limerick people guard its reputation closely. If you’re down that direction, you have to try it.

2. Reel Dingle Fish, Dingle, Kerry

On Bridge Street in the centre of Dingle town, the Reel Dingle Fish takeaway is a semi-legendary haunt for those looking for a wide array of fresh fish – ranging from the standard cod all the way to monkfish, all locally sourced.

3. Fish Shop, Dublin

The Fish Shop earned its reputation for quality fish and chips out in Blackrock, but they have recently opened another establishment closer to Dublin’s city centre in Smithfield. If it’s anything like the quality in its original premises, it will soon be one of the most popular purveyors of fish and chips in the capital.

4. Jack Jordan’s, Doughiska, Galway

In Doughiska on the east side of Galway city, people have been known to travel from far and wide to get their paws on some of Jack’s fish suppers. They even have a gluten free option for those that are still looking to get their fish and chips fix, without that pesky gluten getting in the way.

5. Jackie Lennox’s, Cork

Fiorentini’s has been serving up fish and chips in Derry for over 100 years at this stage, and the locals show no signs of losing their appetite for it. They are equally as well known for their Italian ice cream, so it would be rude not to have one of them straight after.

7. The Saltee Chipper, Kilmore Quay, Wexford

Kilmore Quay sits right on the south coast of County Wexford, and there you will find perhaps the South East’s finest fish and chip shop. You can sit outside and look out over the water, but the real reason you’re there is the sumptuous fish and gorgeous chips on offer – as well as a 99 to finish.

8. Golden Fry, Ballinlough Road, Cork

The age old debate about whether this Cork instiution serves a better fish and chips than the other in Jackie Lennox’s won’t be settled here. Suffice to say that The Golden Fry on the Ballinlough Road has plenty of support on the ground. It might just come down to whichever one you’re closest to.

9. Longs, Belfast

17. Beshoff Bros, Dublin

Another Dublin institution that has opened its doors in a few locations in town, but it’s the Howth establishment that made its name. Excellent fish and chips in the sea air – there’s nothing better.
