IN PLACES LIKE New York, there are plenty of specialty shops to get your paws on some nostalgic tastes of Ireland.
But there aren’t that many places that can replicate the authentic chipper.
And that’s where The Chipper Truck in The Bronx steps in
The roving food truck tends to stick around the Woodlawn, Bronx area most nights – and they’re dedicated to replicating the classic chipper taste in the States.
Earlier this year, The Gothamist had the truck at number one in its list of places to get Irish food in the city:
The Chipper Truck – for the most immersive Irish experience, you have to be in the northern end of the Bronx, where a vibrant immigrant community lives in Woodlawn.
Alice and Valentino run it – bringing her mother’s traditional boxty with her - and their menu pretty much has it all.
Alice tells DailyEdge.ie why they started it over ten years ago:
I missed my food from Ireland and my husband is a great cook and had been cooking Irish food for almost 20 years. So I put the two together and I had a win win situation. We couldn’t afford a restaurant so we opened the truck.
They go the full spectrum, starting with dirty chipper burgers
From breakfast rolls
To taco cheese chips
And the full Irish, obviously
They’ve even opened up a couple of cafes elsewhere in New York packed with the same Irish grub
They’ve been doing it a while now, so and it looks like they’ve got the chipper food down to a tee
Which is probably why the queues are hectic on the regular
Doing god’s work on the streets of New York
