Friday at the movies - Give Up Yer Aul Sins (video)
EVERY FRIDAY,TheJournal.ie presents a brilliant Irish short film for you to enjoy as you ease into the weekend…
This week: Give Up Yer Aul Sins – the story of John the Baptist
Brown Bag Films are Oscar-nominee veterans (Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty was nominated in 2010). This week’s brilliant classic from their Give Up Yer Aul Sins series was their first nomination for Best Animated Short at the 2001 Academy Awards.
Based on original recordings taken by Peig Cunningham in Dublin schoolrooms in the 1960s, this particular one directed by Cathal Gaffney features a young girl retelling the Biblical tale of John the Baptist, his pal Jesus – a “shockin’ holy saint” – and John’s eventual demise. Reimagined with funny and artful animation, this short is a perennial favourite and deserves a replay.
