THE GAMERGATE DEBATE rages on.
The controversy – precipitated by games journalist Nathan Grayson being accused of giving games developer Zoe Quinn favourable coverage while the pair were in a relationship, even though Grayson never wrote about Quinn – has come to be defined by two opposing sides; one concerned with women being shut out from gaming and another concerned with ethics in gaming journalism.
Those concerned with ‘ it’s actually about ethics in gaming journalism’ are seen as disputing what’s perceived to be a deeply ingrained misogyny that exists in the gaming world.
Newsweek decided to analyse some data, asking a social media analytics company to look through a large swathe of the 2 million #GamerGate tweets.

The results showed that maybe it’s not about ethics in gaming journalism after all, with several of the women who disagree with GamerGate (Quinn, journalist Leigh Alexander, developer Brianna Wu) had all received significantly more negative tweets that male counterparts or players.
Meanwhile, the “it’s actually about ethics in gaming journalism” has become something of an object of ridicule…
