IT’S HOLY COMMUNION season, and eight-year-olds around Ireland are preparing themselves for the big day.
But many non-religious parents are now facing the challenge of informing grandparents that their precious grandchildren are not partaking.
Nonie Love posted in the popular Oh My God What A Complete Aisling Facebook group about how her ‘Memmeh’ (AKA mam) was coping with her grandsons not making their Communion.
Love said that instead of going to the church, they took them to an adventure centre for the day:
Back in the day Memmeh wasn’t happy when we told her we didn’t believe in god. She was still shocked when we didn’t get our youngest two christened just in case.
We didn’t want our sons feeling left out on the day the classmates made their Communion, so we had a ‘non Communion’ day and headed off to an adventure centre. Memmeh took things a step further sticking €20 into a card, so they still got a bit of money.
And with a bit of creativity, a standard First Holy Communion card was turned into a ‘non-Communion’ card.
We hope you both had a great day celebrating not getting your Communion.
Lovely, but with a generous dollop of that Irish mammy passive-aggression we all know and love. (God) bless you, ladies.
