1. The tasting menu at The Mews, Baltimore, Cork

This restaurant, opened on something of a whim by a group of friends (including head chef Luke Matthews) has already garnered rave reviews including five stars from Catherine Cleary in the Irish Times. You’re asked not to use your phone at the table and the tasting menu is made up of the best ingredients that have come the chef’s way that day. Booking is advised.

2. Scotch Eggs at Mulligans, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7

Renowned for its pub grub and cosy interior, Mulligan’s scotch eggs (both meat and vegetarian) are a staple of the ever-changing menu.

3. The Food Depot, Cork

Providing gourmet street food at various spots around Cork including Courtmacsherry Beach and West Cork Business Park. Grub like grilled toulouse sausage wrap, lentil and vegetable stew and slow roasted pork. Check their Facebook page for next locations.

4. The local catch at Out Of The Blue, Dingle, Co. Kerry

This restaurant overlooking the Dingle Harbour is closed in the winter months, so you need to get there at the right time to sample the fresh-from-the-sea delights. Oh, and they don’t serve chips, so don’t ask.

5. A Blaa from Hickeys Bakery in Waterford

Waterford’s oldest bakery has been making hand crafted blaas since 1958; both the soft and crusty varieties. You can buy them direct from the bakery on Barrack St and eat them fresh. Or if you can, wait to fry a few sausages. Divine.

6. Scampi and crab claws at Smugglers Creek, Rossnowlagh, Co Donegal

A pub with one of the best views in the country, Smugglers also offers some of the best local food, with the menu divided into “food from the land” and “food from the sea”. The crab claws are a big favourite here.

7. Burger and chips at Harry’s Shack, Portstewart, Co Derry

Another restaurant changing its menu to suit what’s going on around it, Harry’s was recently named as one of the best places to eat in the country by John and Sally McKenna. The burger is served on brioche and the setting is wonderful.

9. Vegetable bakes at The Happy Pear, Greystones

People go to Greystones specifically to visit The Happy Pear for a wonderful meal after a long walk. Specialising in veggie and vegan dishes, there’s a range of delicious bakes on offer from mushroom cream to celeriac lasagne with basil cashew cream.
