Open thread: Who is your favourite Irish female vocalist?
LAST WEEK, WE asked you who you reckoned the best Irish male vocalist was. This week, it’s time for the ladies.
Simon Cowell’s pet project The You Generation is on the hunt this week for the best female singers around. The You Generation is a global, virtual talent competition run by hopefuls submitting entries via YouTube – and, by the way, it’s open in Ireland. As a country, we’ve typically been blessed with an abundance of musical talent, and our gals don’t let the side down.
We’ve put together a few of personal favourites to get the juices flowing. Who do you reckon is the best?
Sinead O’Connor
This performance of Mandinka from the 1989 Grammy Awards is nothing short of breath-taking.

Dana
Political dalliances aside, everyone has a soft spot for the kooky crooner Dana. Sure, she contributed to our Eurovision success and we’ve got to hand it to her for that.

Andrea Corr
And all of the Corrs, actually. Sorry, but Jim you don’t qualify.

Frances Black
A truly engaging stage presence, Frances just might be the best thing to come out of Ranelagh. Well, at least until they started getting those really nice coffee shops.

Mary Coughlan
A husky voice, jazzy stylings and an unabashedly outspoken nature. Mary’s not for the faint of heart.

Enya
The enigmatic Donegal singer that emerged as part of Celtic mysticism greats, Clannad, and quickly disappeared back to her castle shortly afterwards.

Linda Martin
We had to put this in. Linda Martin and Daft Punk truly are the perfect storm. God love her, she tried.

Do you fancy yourself a bit of a singer? Are you up there with B*Witched or are you more of a Mary Black? Or maybe even an Samantha Mumba?
Entries opened on the 29th of June, so get your vocal cords limbered up and submit your own video.
Let us know in the comments who your favourite Irish female vocalist is – and whether or not you measure up yourself. Are you the missing addition to the list?
