IT’S A BUMPER YEAR for the Irish at the Oscars as Brooklyn and Room both land Best Picture nominations.
Saoirse Ronan and Brie Larson received nods in the Best Actress category for their roles in Brooklyn and Room respectively, while Michael Fassbender is up for Best Actor for Steve Jobs.
Lenny Abrahamson has been nominated for Best Director, alongside George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Alejandro G Innaritu (The Revenant).
At the Irish Room premiere at the Lighthouse this week, Abrahamson dismissed any notion that he would be nominated for an Oscar, saying “believe it or not, you can know” who’s going to be nominated. He said he felt it wasn’t to be his year. How wrong he was.
Emma Donoghue is up for Best Adapted Screenplay for Room, while British author Nick Hornby was nominated for his work on the Brooklyn screenplay.
Elsewhere, Irish director Benjamin Cleary was nominated for his live-action short film, Stutterer.
