Irish Republican memes are taking over the internet

The Rising centenary gets its own jokes.

AS THE CENTENARY of the 1916 Rising approaches, so too does its own particular impact on internet culture.

One place where that impact has become notable is the rise in popularity of Republican memes, with varying themes including the six counties, Republican garb and ideals, and plays on the language associated with striving for a 32 county Ireland.

A popular Facebook group, Drunken Irish Memes, has developed a closed group called Drunken Republicans Inc, for the purpose of posting “Irish memes”, while various images are being shared far and wide beyond the usual interest groups like Republican Memes.
