10 superstitions Irish people can't get enough of

~verry superstitious~

IT’S FRIDAY THE 13th, one of the two days this year that everyone can indulge in a little superstition.

Or not.

As a nation though, we have a long and storied history in the world of superstitions. Like:

1. NEVER pick up a comb off the ground

Because it’s disgusting? No! Bad luck.

2. If you spot a magpie by itself, you simply have to acknowledge it

3. But also if you see two magpies on your right that’s good luck

Just always be on the lookout for magpies, basically.

4. Having an itchy nose is a sure sign that you’re about to have a fight

This is probably more due to the deep, deep annoyance of having an itchy nose than anything supernatural.

5. If you fall over in a graveyard, you’ll be dead within the year

For the love of god don’t run around in a graveyard.

6. And ALWAYS bless yourself when you’re passing one

Possibly the most adhered-to superstition still around.

7. Don’t move or build over a fairy fort

Sacred ground.

As per Wikipedia:

Workmen were working to level earthworks in a fairy fort at Dooneeva. The originator of this fell apparently dead. His wife, a wise woman brought him back to life magically.

“Yeah, sure we’ll flatten that mound and build a few houses” – doomed builder.

8. No new shoes on the table, please

Old, dirty ones are grand.

9. Handing someone a knife is bad luck

Put it on the table first.

With the old shoes.

10. Bird shite landing on you is the definition of good luck

Even though it really doesn’t feel that way when it happens.

Happy Friday the 13th <3
