THIS IS JAMEELA Jamil. She’s a British radio presenter, writer, and campaigner for body confidence.
Last night, Jameela delivered an absolute stonker of a speech in the House of Commons on the subject of self-esteem, body image and the media.
She described her happiness at being the first female presenter of BBC Radio 1′s Official Chart show, and then her disappointment when newspapers reported on her weight instead of her achievements.
…It came out that I had gained almost 200,000 listeners on my show. The papers ignored [this] and instead ran a wonderful piece that I’d gained – not 200,000 listeners on my show, but instead – two dress sizes.
But she said she wouldn’t give in to the pressure to be “a particular shape or size”:
Pardon me if will always wobble just a little bit when I walk. Pardon me if I want the daughter I may have one day to grow up wanting a good heart, a good mind, and a good life – and not a f**king thigh gap.
The sentiment is getting a LOT of love on Twitter.
Watch the entire speech here and get inspired.
