James Corden walked near London Bridge and delivered this emotional opening monologue last night
FOR ONE WEEK only, James Corden has brought his hit US late night TV show back to his hometown of London.
And last night was the first show of what looks set to be a jam-packed week.
He opened it by walking beside Big Ben – “just a mile or so” from where the horrific attack took place on Saturday night – and celebrated the city in an emotional monologue
“It’s so sad when I think about all the times since I took this job that I had to open this show talking about such atrocities and trying to find the right words to say is impossible because there are none”

“But this time it felt incredibly close to home, all of our Late Late Show staff were out in London on Saturday night having a great time and we were all staying in a hotel about two minutes away from where the attack took place”

“Some people may say it’s a strange time to do a variety show from this city – I couldn’t disagree more. A lot is going to happen here in the next few days, we’re going to elect a Prime Minister in Great Britain and just behind that building there is the Houses of Parliament. A building that represents democracy, something that the people who carried out this attack hate”

“We’re going to bring you the silliest, stupidest, most fun-packed shows we’ve ever made for you to celebrate London and Britain and everything it has to offer. And you know what? The people who carried out that attack would hate that too.”

In a touching moment, Corden finished with a loving sign-off to his favourite city:

This week of shows in his home city have been planned for ages now, and there was no way of knowing that the crew would be setting up to broadcast in such tragic circumstances.
But everyone watching was impressed with how it was handled

And, as a bonus for his temporary return to London, he brought Ed Sheeran in for his Carpool Karaoke
He brought his guitar too.
A fitting star to have for his week back home.
