Comedian who was axed for being female gets apology after Twitter backs her up
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY was a bit of a write off for Mirth Control Comedy.
The comedy bookers found themselves in the middle of a Twitter storm after a female stand-up was booted from the bill at a comedy club, just because she was a girl.
Jenny Collier took to Twitter on Friday to reveal that she’d been dropped from a show because there were “too many” women scheduled to go on stage.
The internet responded accordingly:
The story made waves on all forms of social media, eventually reaching the comedy bookers associated with the show.
The team at Mirth Control Comedy have issued a statement on their official website, apologising for any offence caused.
They went on to argue that no outright ban had been placed on female comics by the venue, and stated that they would not work with any venue which wished to exclude women from the bill entirely.
The group also apologised to Collier for the wording of the email she received, which they described as “inappropriate in our view in it’s wording”.
