The 40-year-old Golden Globe-winning actor is a recovering alcoholic who has been to rehab in 2005, 2007 and in 2009.

He was travelling on an American Airlines flight from Miami to LA with his wife Mara, who he married in 2016, and their 18-month-old son Wolf.

Jonathan reportedly became verbally abusive to Mara, upset other passengers, and tried to smoke his e-cigarette in a bathroom, which carries a $4,000 fine. He complied with the flight attendants and restrained from smoking, but upon his return to his seat continued to be ‘agitated and argumentative’ towards Mara.

Last September, Jonathan was ejected from Dublin airport.

Around 10am in the morning, after he was found ‘staggering and disheveled‘ near his departure gate. He was trying to board a transatlantic flight at the time, but was prevented by security who deemed him to be too intoxicated.

A day after the incident in Dublin, Mara posted on Instagram that she had miscarried their much wanted second child.

In the long, heartfelt post, Mara linked her miscarriage with Jonathan’s intoxication at the airport:

With much sadness, we open our hearts to share that J and I lost our second child, who was baking in the oven. Child was very very much wanted (right now especially by J, so he took the news particularly not so well) and we are still working with coping skills over here… when life throws us curve balls such as these.

Mara went on to make excuses for Jonathan’s behaviour, linking it to depression, as well as support him emotionally:

Depression is a real concern from past abuse as well as alcoholism which he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art and is the strongest person I know. I do not know anyone who has been through what he has been through and reached his level of successes. It does seem though that every time we seem to be making so much progress… sometimes it’s like two steps forward, one step back.

She explained that his drinking was a coping mechanism:

To some others, my husband is an Irishman who battles alcoholism and depression and drank between jobs to try to cope with the sadness of this news.

She ended her post on a poignant message:

Life is tough sometimes though so let’s try not looking down at someone unless we intend on helping them up.

Hope you get the help you need Jonathan. Those cheekbones need to make a big screen comeback!
