LARRY GOGAN HAS paid tribute to his old radio pal Tony Fenton, calling him a “DJ’s DJ”.

Gogan told DailyEdge.ie that Fenton – who passed away this morning at St Vincent’s Hospital – loved his job.

He loved everything about it. He loved the music. There was always a buzz around when Tony was around.

Gogan recalls meeting Fenton with Barry Lang about four weeks ago, and said that Fenton was endlessly positive that he was getting back on his feet and would soon be back on air.

He was always in great form. I never saw him in bad humour.

Ill health had forced him off air at Today FM for the past ten months. He had voiced a series of documentaries about Irish music late last year, which was his last work for the station.

Gogan described a feeling of great sadness around the RTÉ radio centre today, as the news broke.

RTÉ released a statement today, saying that he was “at his happiest when he was in a studio when the red light went on”.

Ray D’Arcy meanwhile paid tribute to his former colleague, calling him a “true legend”.

Tony kept saying ‘I’m coming back, I’m coming back, I’ll be back on air’. And that’s what kept him going.
To see him unwell was shattering.
He loved life, he loved music, he loved radio.

D’arcy played Say A Little Prayer For You in Fenton’s memory.
