'Lasagne disaster' inspires the best headline ever

Garfield would have had a field day.

BRACE YOURSELVES. HERE it is. The best headline ever, courtesy of the Gaffney Ledger, a local paper in the US state of South Carolina.

What? What could this possibly mean? Where is this “lasagna”? Why is it everywhere?

Attempts to find out on the Gaffney Ledger website were met with a paywall, but the good folks at Deadspin have pulled some choice quotes from the story.

Here’s how the lasagne got everywhere: A truck got stuck while attempting to cross some train tracks. As the two drivers were trying to get it free, they saw a train approaching.

Both drivers managed to flee the truck and run to safety, but the trailer was not so lucky.

The train… sliced through the trailer, carrying a portion of it with it as it continued down the tracks. Cartons and boxes of frozen food spilled all over the tracks.
“There was an inch of lasagne ground into the pavement,” Turner said. “[The firefighters] came down with the truck to hose off the road but the water was beading up. They eventually used big buckets of detergent and brooms to scrub the roadway.”

No one was injured, but the lasagne smeared all over the road did cause some problems for rush-hour commuters. Delightful.

But at least one good thing did come from this disaster – that beast of a headline. Kudos, Gaffney Ledger. Kudos.
