Woman hears music for the first time after 40 years
TWO DAYS AGO Joanne Milne heard for the first time.
The 40-year-old, who was born deaf, underwent surgery last month and had her cochlear implant turned on earlier this week, allowing her to hear sounds and her own voice for the first time in her life.
As she had never heard music before, she asked one of her best friends Tremayne Crossley to make a mixtape for her to introduce her to some of the songs she had missed over the past forty years.
Crossley submitted the mixtape to BBC 6 Music’s Memory Tapes segment and this morning his playlist and story was broadcast by DJ Lauren Laverne… and Joanne was listening in to hear some of his chosen songs for the first time.
Laverne tweeted several times about the segment and said that she and her team were in tears in the studio after watching Jo’s reaction to having her implants turned on:
Crossley said he sat with a blank piece of paper for a week after Joanne asked him to compile her special introduction to music.
He said he chose one song for every year since she was born, including tunes that meant a lot to him as well as songs that she had unknowingly danced to in the past.
Among the songs chosen by Tremayne were:
Electric Light Orchestra – Mr. Blue Sky
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band – She’s the One – Live at Hammersmith Odeon
Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
The Jam – Town Called Malice
Tracy Chapman – Fast Car
Nirvana – All Apologies
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps
Elbow – One Day Like This
Bat for Lashes - Laura
Foo Fighters – Everlong
Prince – When Doves Cry

After the radio segment Crossley tweeted:
