BROADCASTER AND JOURNALIST Louise McSharry has had a serious rollercoaster of a few years.
Louise, who is in remission after a battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, spoke about her joy of discovering she is pregnant on the Ray D’arcy show last night–despite the odds of conceiving naturally being against her and husband Gordon due to treatment.
The 2fm presenter is now 24 weeks pregnant, and about to release a memoir documenting everything from her tumultuous childhood, body issues, and feminism, to abandoning education and still ‘making it’.
Despite such happy news, the last few months have also been quite bittersweet.
She spoke to Ray about the recent death of her biological mother, the same day she felt the baby kick for the first time.
The circle of life was put to me in black and white terms, because my biological mother, I got a phone call to say she was going to die in the next few hours, and I had just felt my baby kick for the first time, so it was a stark juxtaposition and made me really think of life, one thing goes and another thing starts.

She also spoke about fat shaming and how she wanted to use her book to help others who might be facing the same struggles accepting their body that she once did.
When I started about writing a book, I started thinking, what do I want a book I wrote to be? I didn’t want it to be ‘oh I had a sad childhood and I had cancer’.
I wanted it to serve a purpose, and for me, my journey with body image has been really difficult. I’m in a good place now, I feel a bit like an evangelist, I want to help people feel better about themselves.
She said the mere thought of being fat and the negative connotations that society puts on it, was “torture” to her.
We live in a world that is absolutely cruel to fat people, fat people’s bodies are up for discussion all the time, people feel entitled to talk about them tell you about it face to face.

Sometimes, she explained, people don’t even know they’re doing it.
If I sit in an office with coworkers and they’re talking about being such a fat cow because they had a takeout for dinner and they’re a size 10, and I’m sitting there a size 20. How am I feeling about my body? What must they think of me if they think they’re disgusting?
A lot of people think fat people should be punished, and they shouldn’t have nice clothes, and they shouldn’t feel good about themselves.
