9 reasons why Maeve (or Medb/Meabh/Meadhbh) is the hardest name to have abroad

*How* do you spell that?

THERE HAVE BEEN many brilliant Maeves/Medbs/Meadhbhs/Méabhs throughout history — Queen Medb, Maeve Binchy and Maeve Higgins to name but a few.

In 2015,  Meabh was the 83rd most popular name in Ireland, while Maeve was the 450th most popular name in the United States

Despite all this, however, the name Maeve/Medb/Meadhbh/Meabh is still perplexing to many.

No matter how many times you spell it out for people, they still manage to include the wrong vowel.

M-a-i-v-e, right?

You feel bad whenever you have to spell your name out because you’re aware it must make no sense to non-Irish speakers

Wait, you’re saying a ‘-dhbh’ makes a ‘v’ sound? What kind of sorcery is this?

You’re used to long pauses before your name…

And you’ve grinned politely as someone calls you “mayvee”

If you’re named Meadhbh/Meabh/Medb, you’re used to apologising to people

Don’t blame me. Blame the Irish language.

“Hello, can I speak to Med-bee?” “Speaking.”

Christmas cards are always unpredictable…

You’ve gotten cards addressed to Meave, Maebh, Meadhbh, Maedhbh, Maive and Mave over the years. None of which really helps with Christmas spirit…

LIFE IS SO HARD.

But as frustrating as it might be, at least you know that your name is the envy of people the world over

Now there’s something to be smug over.
