Yes, RTÉ's weather lady said 'Good night, Mary' tonight - here's why

Who’s Mary?

TONIGHT, MET ÉIREANN’S Joanna Donnelly closed out her weather broadcast with a rather odd sign-off.

Bidding farewell to viewers, she said, “Good night, Mary.”

The line confused loads of viewers with many taking to Twitter to see if they had misheard or whether she had indeed said, “Good night, Mary.”

Worry not, though. It wasn’t an embarrassing slip on Donnelly’s part.

Instead she was paying tribute to the legendary television actress Mary Tyler Moore, who passed away earlier today.

In fact, Donnelly took to Twitter to remember the actress earlier this evening.

Donnelly has form when it comes to paying tribute to fallen celebrities. This is how she paid tribute to Prince last year.

There won’t be any rain. Purple or otherwise.
