Prehistoric Road Sign of the Day

Seen in West Cork, apparently.

THIS RATHER UNIQUE road sign was discovered in west Cork by Reddit user BakersDozen:

A little Googling, meanwhile, reveals that Flickr user Shane Horan found a similar - but subtly different - one. He writes that this ancient specimen was photographed in 2007 in Kealkill, on the road between Macroom and Glengariff.

So what are the signs all about? And why are they the same, but different?  Answers on a postcard (or in the comments) please...
