New Irish character debuts on 'Glee' - and is mistaken for a leprechaun

Exchange student Rory Flanagan sings ‘It Ain’t Easy Bein’ Green’ and tries to get Brittany’s ‘pot of gold’.

GLEE INTRODUCED THE latest addition to its cast in an episode broadcast in America last night – an Irish exchange student who is mistaken for a leprechaun by other students, grants wishes, and only wears green. Yes, really.

In the episode of the hit show, entitled ‘Pot O’Gold’, Rory Flanagan is an exchange student at McKinley High who tries to fit in but is bullied by other students.

He is staying with cheerleader Brittany, who believes that he is a leprechaun. Rory has a crush on Brittany so in order to win her over and get her ‘pot of gold’ – yes, he actually says that – he plays along with the delusion and agrees to grant her three wishes.

Brittany calls him ‘Rory Leprechaun’ throughout the episode.

Rory becomes increasingly upset as he is bullied by other students, who greet him with ‘Hey Irish’ and knock his (green – of course) hat off his head.

Rory’s first song, which he sings to express his unhappiness that the other students haven’t accepted him, is the Muppets classic ‘It Ain’t Easy Bein’ Green’.

At one stage Rory is pushed into a locker by a fellow student who tells him to ‘go back to Mexico’.

Flanagan is played by Damien McGinty, a 19-year-old from Derry, who will be appearing seven episodes of the hit show.

McGinty was the winner of a reality show aimed at finding the next star of the show. Speaking to the Huffington Post last week, McGinty said that Lea Michele – who plays talented neurotic Rachel – has had some trouble understanding his accent. He said:

Lea literally, after everything I say, will look at me like I have three heads. She just does not understand anything I say. It’s very funny.

Here’s a teaser for last night’s episode which can be seen in Ireland tonight on Sky One at 9pm
