BIRDMAN WAS NAMED Best Picture at last night’s Academy Awards. The showbiz satire edged out its nearest rival, Boyhood, to take the honour. It also nabbed awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography.

Julianne Moore was named Best Actress for her performance as a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in Still Alice, while Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for his turn as Stephen Hawking.

Early frontrunner Boyhood won just one award with Patricia Arquette being named Best Supporting Actress. JK Simmons won Best Supporting Actor for his startling performance in Whiplash.

Elsewhere, The Grand Budapest Hotel matched Birdman’s tally, picking up four awards. Whiplash took home three awards, while American Sniper, Selma and The Imitation Game each took home one.

There was disappointment for Irish viewers as neither Song of the Sea nor Boogaloo & Graham managed to triumph in their categories.
