Here's why your Irish pancakes are different from the ones in the films

And how you can make yourself some proper US ones from scratch.

PANCAKES, WE ALL love them.

And not just when pancake Tuesday rolls around every year.

But there is a vast difference between our version of pancakes, here

According to the Women’s Thoughts blog, it comes down to a straight difference in ingredients, making the US pancakes much thicker but not as wide.

They describe Irish/UK pancakes as being:

made up of three main ingredients, flour, milk and eggs.  The batter is a lighter mixture and the pancakes are thinner and again lighter in colour often being a lot larger.

And the US ones differ greatly:

The quantities of ingredients used vary with more eggs being added to the mixture and also a raising agent, which gives the pancakes their thicker heavier texture.  They also tend to be slightly smaller, but stack better for the purpose of pouring maple syrup over.

The American ones are perfect for stacking and drenching in syrup, as shown here in drool-worthy fashion

Not only that, but the American ones are used primarily as a breakfast dish throughout the whole year.

How to actually make your own Amercian style pancakes

According to the Guardian’s guide on how to cook American pancakes, maple syrup and bacon are a must-have alongside them.

They begin by saying what we already know:

the thicker American pancake chases an ideal of fluffy lightness

It’s the key.
