LAST WEEK, DAILYEDGE.IE told you all about Penneys latest beauty offering – the PS Liquid Fix.

Priced at €3, the product as touted as dupe for Inglot’s mixing medium Duraline – to be used for turning shadows to liner, applying pigment and reviving old gel products.

It’s also supposed to help fix broken powders and compacts.

With Duraline being €12 a pop, Penneys offering is a quarter of the price. Is it actually any use though?

• Penneys: €3
• Duraline: €12

Size

• Penneys: 14ml
• Duraline: 9ml

Consistency

• Penneys: Watery, runs off hand if you move it or if you drop out more than one drop
• Duraline: More comparable to a serum in texture; doesn’t run off hand

Liner

• Penneys: When applying the brush on the powder and dipping into a small amount of the product, the powder doesn’t appear to immediately mix. It seems to settle on the service of the liquid. However, upon application, it applies smoothy and with good coverage and pigment.
• Duraline: The eyeshadow almost immediately combines with the liquid product to create a liquid colour. The combination then applies smoothly with full coverage and pigment.

Pigment

• Penneys: The pigment and the liquid combine seamlessly, without needing much of each to come together. The two together applies smoothly, leaving a wet-look, glossy finish. Some of the colour of the pigment is lost.
• Duraline: Using too much of the liquid product results in lumps forming or too much product being applied in areas. The combined product applies more like what a traditional powder eyeshadow. None of the colour is lost.

Reviving (years old!) gel eyeliner

• Penneys: With the Liquid Fix, you need a lot of product before you start seeing any massive colour pay-off. It doesn’t apply very smoothly, but with a bit of work you can draw on a reasonable winged cat-eye.
• Duraline: Only a small amount of liquid is required to resurrect the gel. Upon application, colour pay-off is immediate and smooth.

So, what’s the verdict?

The Penneys PS Liquid Fix is a good dupe, but not a great dupe. The majority of MUAs and casual usual users I know tend to reach for Duraline to use with gel products – something which the Liquid Fix just isn’t as good at.

However, it was extremely comparable on the power liner test, and the finish on the pigment was very pretty, if a bit different to that with Duraline.

At €3, you can’t really argue with that!
