A police car parked in a disabled spot has gone hugely viral

Oh dear.

THIS POLICE OFFICER in Lafayette, Indiana might be sorry about his parking choices after this image went viral online.

The image was posted by Redditor TheToolMan, who said “my local police must be responding to a pancake emergency”. It was originally posted on Facebook by Ryan Schmitt who claimed that his father – a wheelchair user -was forced to park further than the door than necessary.

However, as a local Fox News outlet reports, there was no pancake emergency. No emergency at all in fact, as the officer who owned the car was inside the IHOP enjoying breakfast.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports that the local police department has apologised for the incident and said that the officer in question did not realise he had parked in an accessible space.

It’s been pointed out by imgur users that for parking in the the disabled space to be an offence the spot needs to bear both a marking on the ground and a sign, as per the Indiana code, so that the officer technically wasn’t breaking any laws.

The local police chief said that wasn’t the point though who said that officers:

…need to understand that perception is reality for a lot of people.

After millions of views and thousands of comments online, it’s big news locally, and much further afield.
