AS A NATION we practically subsist on potato waffles, Birdseye or otherwise. It’s time to give them their due.
1. You can eat them with anything
Fry ups, chicken nuggets, fish fingers, eggs, cheese…
They said it in the ad! THEY’RE WAFFLEY VERSATILE (beep boop).
2. They are so freaking cheap
Ten for €1 or something obscene like that.
3. And almost too easy to make
Put ‘em in the toaster. Sit down for a bit. Put down the toaster again. Sit down for another while. Get your waffles. Eat.
4. Which means they’ve been keeping students alive for YEARS
Go to any student house and you will find a freezer that is wall to wall waffles.
5. As well as being the first thing every Irish child learns to ‘cook’
“Mammy I’m hungry.” “Stick on some waffles there then.”
6. They’re so beloved that Irish emigrants in Australia started a campaign to get them over
And they succeeded!
7. They are the default image for waffles in your mind
Not the fluffy dessert type.
8. And there’s something so wonderfully retro about having them as an adult
