ATHLONE INSTITUTION SEAN’S Bar is well known in Ireland as being the oldest pub in Europe – but now it’s got another feather in its cap.

Lonely Planet’s new guidebook details ’50 Bars To Blow Your Mind’ around the world – and Sean’s makes it on to the list.

And they’ve chosen well

It was founded in 900 AD and proudly proclaims that the Guinness Book of Records has it down as Europe’s oldest pub

Lonely Planet outlined the criteria for inclusion, and it certainly rings true for Sean’s:

perhaps the secret sauce in all this is genuine desire to delight each person who walks through the door. It’s a love of hospitality and an enthusiasm for the precious drop.

Because a pint in Sean’s with the fire blazing is worthy of some global recognition

And anyone picking up the guidebook won’t go far wrong with its Irish recommendation
