PEOPLE HAVE BEEN spotting semicolon tattoos popping up on social media over the last number of weeks – and there is a real reason and movement behind this viral sensation.
Under the #ProjectSemicolon hashtag, people are posting images of their tattoos as a way to inspire others with mental health issues. And it’s taking over Instagram and Twitter:
It’s become a phenomenon – but there is a real life story behind it
A US woman named Amy Bleuel co-founded the project after she lost her father to suicide. She told the Huffington Post why she set it up:
I set out to inspire others so they can know they are not alone, that their story matters.
The Project has its own website, and has established a massive audience on social media as well. They explain why they chose the humble semicolon to inspire others:
A semicolon represents a sentence the author could have ended, but chose not to. That author is you and the sentence is your life.
So that message has become the central theme of #ProjectSemicolon
And over the last week, social media has been filled with people getting on board
With many more people now knowing what the semicolon really represents
The enthusiasm has been widespread
And everyone wanted to let people know that their story isn’t over
It’s their life and they plan on living it to inspire
Even those not getting tattoos wanted to help in any way they could – so some have been drawing on the semicolon
Well done, everyone.
